About this Event
Australian-born, Paris-based contemporary artist Mel O’Callaghan has worked with the musicians at Adelaide Chamber Music to interpret and perform a score by the artist for a one-off memorable performance.
Hear musicians from Chamber Music Adelaide interpret the score of Mel O’Callaghan’s Centre of the Centre as performers enact Respire, Respire – a performance devised by artist Mel O’Callaghan, in which attendants will use trance-induction techniques, engaging in cyclical breathing, and potentially triggering altered states of consciousness including ecstasy.
The performance accompanies the O’Callaghan’s exhibition Centre of the Centre which traces the origins of life and its regenerative forces, iterated through video, performance, and sculpture. Each element captures the motion of breath in response to extreme environments.
The catalyst for this exhibition was one small mineral given to the artist by her grandfather, renowned mineralogist Albert Chapman. The mineral contains a small pocket of water, possibly millions of years old, which holds traces of the elemental forces responsible for all life on earth.
