About this Event
London-based Forensic Architecture and its Berlin-based sister organisation Forensis talk about their broader practice in this edition of Research Nights. They will explore the ethical and conceptual frameworks that underpin counter-forensic investigations and also examine the potential for designers and spatial practitioners to engage with systemic and systematic state abuse, such as police violence, and the ethical implications of such work. With contributions by Lola Conte, Natalia Sliwinska, Phoebe Walton, Setareh Noorani, Tijn van de Wijdeven and others.
Speakers
Lola Conte is a designer and researcher at Forensic Architecture (FA). While at FA, she has worked on a number of detailed investigations, using spatial and architectural analysis. This includes cases of police brutality, border militarisation and environmental as well as digital violence. Her personal research explores the intersection of technology and the legal sphere, specifically, the use of virtual links for defendants appearing remotely from spaces of incarceration.
Natalia Sliwinska is a multidisciplinary designer and researcher at Forensic Architecture. She uses design methodologies, archival material, film and open-source data to produce work aimed at exposing human rights violations and amplifying marginalised histories. Her work has been shown at Waag Futurelab, Roots Film Festival and Stroom.
Phoebe Walton is a researcher at Forensis, and has a background in Architecture. She has worked on cases of police brutality and state violence towards migrants and refugees. Working at the intersection of law, politics and space, her practice interrogates how systemic and systematic injustices manifests spatially, from the scale of the body to ocean.

Forensis is Forensic Architecture’s sister organisation based in Berlin, working for and in collaboration with communities affected by state and corporate violence, to support their demands for justice, reparations, and accountability.
Research Nights
Research Nights are recurring events informed by emerging interests, ongoing investigations and lines of inquiry currently being explored within the Research team of Nieuwe Instituut. In an intimate and collaborative setting, the audience gains an insight into the various stages of projects and shares ideas through dialogues, workshops, screenings or other experimental activities.
