About this Event
This Research Night will focus on Clipping 2: sum, parts, the second publication resulting from the Through Soundsproject. Our guests will be contributors to the Clipping series, including Monique Todd and Andrea Zarza Canova. They will read and discuss excerpts from the new publication.
Clipping 2 contains commissioned texts on the possibilities of listening as a form of testimony. This new edition not only explores the meaning of sound, voices and stories, but also pushes the boundaries of the ‘unlistenable’. Building on the insights gained at NADD’s Regenerative Archives Day, we will also reflect on the concept of listening as a means of archiving sound.
Clippings
Clippings is a series of publications that brings together excerpts from the ongoing activities of Through Sounds. The series’ title refers to the phenomenon of audio ‘clipping’ – a kind of distortion that occurs when an amplifier is overloaded by sound levels that are too high – as well as to the term for articles cut from newspapers and magazines.
Through Sounds
is a long-term research project by Nieuwe Instituut that looks at this ‘sonic culture’ as a field for spatial and social design. Where people listen is connected to different structures – physical, social, political and socio-economic. We call them ‘listening infrastructures’. Looking at them helps us to understand where and how we access sound, and how we meet and form communities through it.
Research Nights
are recurring events dedicated to emerging interests and ongoing research currently being explored at the Nieuwe Instituut. In an intimate and collaborative setting, visitors can gain insight into projects and share ideas through discussions, workshops, screenings and other experimental activities.
