Presentation Title: Research for National Security at the University of Colorado-Boulder

As the State of Colorado’s flagship research University, hundreds of faculty, researchers and students conduct extensive basic research in support of the needs of the federal national security enterprise, including the Military Services. Much of this research, totalling over $30 million annually, occurs within the College of Engineering & Applied Science. This research expands across all engineering disciplines to include civil, mechanical, aerospace, computer science, electrical and bioengineering. New interdisciplinary programs in robotics, materials science and biomedical have recently evolved. Researchers also work closely with industry partners to advance much of this research and create start-up companies in some cases.

This presentation will provide an overview of the scale and scope of national security research at CU-Boulder and provide specific examples of ongoing research and research outcomes in important defense areas such as robotics, sustainable materials, hypersonics and quantum sensing. Additionally, other aspects of national security engagement to include ROTC programs and students, active duty military students and the Designing for Defense capstone course will be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Dr. William (Bill) Doe serves as the Research Development Manager in the Research Support Office of the College of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU). Bill joined the College in October 2014. In his role, he works directly with all faculty and researchers across six academic Departments and other research units to coordinate federal, state and industry research opportunities. He also coordinates engineering research and engineering educational programs between CU and the Department of Defense, including student-veterans and active duty military. He is the faculty advisor for the CU Student Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and the Chair of the CU Tri-Service ROTC Advisory Board.

He is an Air Force “brat” (son of a career AF officer) and a former career Army officer who has been closely associated with the military for his entire life. Bill is a Professional Engineer (P.E.) and civil/water resources engineer with fifty years of experience in the federal government, non-profit sector and higher education. He served for 22 years as an active duty U.S Army officer/engineer, including seven years on the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy, in the Department of Geography & Environmental Engineering. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and holds advanced degrees in engineering from the University of New Hampshire and Colorado State University. He has been a life-long SAME member in Philadelphia; West Point, NY; southern California and Denver.

Bill’s spouse, Sue, is a Professor of Rhetoric and Composition at Colorado State University. They have three grown children (an independent insurance agent; a city firefighter Lieutenant; and a University sports medicine/athletics doctor) and five grandchildren, and two grandpups. They own a redbone coonhound. Bill and Sue are avid runners and compete regularly. Bill is a member of Team Leadville, sponsored by SAME, that runs the Leadville Marathon/Half Marathon every summer to raise funds to STOP Veterans Suicide.
