About this Event
As of June 1, 2021, 594,000 people in the United States have died because of COVID-19, and worldwide deaths have reached 3.5 million people. Numbers tell us how many, but they do not convey who or the lives that were lived.
By artist Tina Rath, this project has a worldwide scope that gives us the necessary opportunity to grieve together and to acknowledge the importance of each individual that has passed. As we become more comfortable moving about again in the world, Requiem offers the opportunity to pause and reflect.
This project consists of 108 necklaces of carved and ebonized wood that mass together to create a prayer mala or necklace and a collection of circle drawings in gold ink – one circle for each person passed. The names of those that have died are written in each circle. The project also will include exhibitions and the production of a limited edition book (250) to hold a record of the grief project including in-process images, installation images and the collected names of those that passed to date of the printing. About the artist
Tina Rath is an American artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tina’s practice moves fluidly between studio jewelry and drawing. Sometimes durational and always executed with a high attention to detail and a deep interest in process, she explores ideas in distinct bodies of work and projects. Rath's work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Art + Design in NYC, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC as well as in numerous private collections.
