Requiem for a Poisoned Earth is an environmentally driven musical and educational event that aims to emphasize and spread awareness of the global contamination of hazardous PFAS "forever chemicals" and their inescapable health effects. The project is sponsored by the University of North Texas We Mean Green Fund, a student-funded resource that supports projects to advance sustainability initiatives on campus, in collaboration with the College of Music and the Advanced Environmental Research Institute (AERI).
Over 100 UNT student and local musicians will premiere the work of UNT undergraduate composer PJ Mooney, featuring a chamber orchestra and chorus lead by conductor J. Christine Le. Additionally, the event features renowned vocal soloists and UNT voice faculty members Kara Libby, Myles Pinder, Andrea Pinder, and Dr. Daniel Bubeck, as well as the Pyxis Saxophone Quartet.
Before the concert, there will be a panel of representatives to discuss the impacts of PFAS locally, nationally, and globally. Additionally, there will be display boards and pamphlets of information in the lobby space of the event designed to educate and inform those in attendance.
The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the UNT Murchison Performing Arts Center, Winspear Hall. The environmental panel will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. after a short intermission. Tickets are free and first come, first served!
