Reparations or Restitution? Rethinking Justice and Accountability in the Afrikan Diaspora
Part of: Family Day: Take Part
About this Event

Presented by: Brighton & Hove Black History and African Night Fever

What’s it all about?
Join us for a powerful and timely community symposium diving into one of the most urgent conversations of our time — Reparations and Restitution. How do we deal with the legacies of enslavement , colonialism, and racial injustice? What does true justice look like for the Afrikan diaspora?

Reparations or Restitution? These terms are often used together — but they’re not the same. Reparations tend to focus on financial and structural compensation. Restitution? It’s about restoring culture, dignity, and repairing broken historical relationships. This event opens up the space for dialogue between these approaches — and asks: can we imagine a future where both are part of the solution?

Why it matters
From London to Lagos, from Harlem to Havana, the echoes of history are still being felt. As movements for racial justice grow louder around the globe, so does the demand for real accountability. This event isn’t just about looking back — it’s about moving forward, together.

What to expect
Two leading voices will come together to unpack these ideas, challenge assumptions, and invite the community to share, reflect, and shape the conversation.Guest Speakers:
🎤 Professor Ahmed Reid – Renowned historian and former Chair of the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. A leading global voice on the legacy of slavery in the Caribbean and beyond.
🎤 Dr Jenna Marshall – Academic at King’s College London, specialising in justice, equity, and the politics of memory in postcolonial contexts.Whether you’re deeply involved in these issues or just starting to explore them, this event is for you. Come curious. Leave inspired.

Let’s talk truth. Let’s talk justice. Let’s talk future.
