Nostalgia is an overwhelming force that immediately takes you back to a time in your life of purely good memories. With the type of merchandise we deal in, we see it every day. The look on people's faces when they see a favorite item from the past is like none other. It immediately transports you back to a happy moment in time. I think you have to be of a certain age to experience and really appreciate nostalgia. I know it really hit me in my 40s and when we had kids of our own. But here's what you may not be aware of: the nostalgia community, people who like to reminisce about the past is ENORMOUS.
Our Facebook feed is swamped with content from pages like Remembering HILLS Department Stores (16,000 members) and Century III Mall Memories (27,000 members). Whenever we mention anything from the past, a la our beloved Hills, or Children's Palace, or recently Ponderosa (which actually is still around!), the comments, likes, and activity light up. So my thought: why not build an event around this? With that, I introduce the concept for "RETAIL REWIND", coming soon to Remixxd!
There is no blueprint for an event like this. We're building around an idea. So here are some early thoughts on what we'd like to do:
-The Hills Snack Bar truck will be returning to Remixxd with all your favorite treats, including Icees, Hot Pretzels, Hot Dogs, Nachos, and more!
-We're issuing an open invitation to "fans", former employees and executives of any of the defunct/endangered species businesses in the logo, and related businesses (we could only fit so many in the graphic), as well as the online communities referenced above, to meet up at our retail location in Belle Vernon, PA. Wear your NRM t-shirt. Maybe catch up with an old co-worker from 1985. See something from one of these places that will make you say, "How did you get this?"
-An opportunity to buy, sell, trade, and display vintage merchandise from these places. Do you have a coveted Century III star? Are you looking for one? We will have limited availability, reasonably priced tables for anyone who sells items like t-shirts, etc. But the goal here is not centered around money. It's to bring an "internet thing" to life and have a fun time. We build occasions for our store that no one else would consider.
