REMINISCENCES: CHILDHOOD BETWEEN DREAM AND MEMORY
Exhibition from April 17 to May 17 2025
Opening reception on Thursday April 17 2025 from 6:30 PM
Vanities Gallery presents LinGe Meng a poetic exploration of childhood and identity.
Vanities Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Reminiscences: Childhood Between Dream and Memory dedicated to the work of artist LinGe Meng. Through his artworks the Chinese artist explores themes of childhood solitude and dreams embedding his imagination within an introspective and universal approach.
LinGe Meng draws from his personal experiences to weave a dialogue between past and present between memories and reality. Having grown up as an only child in a China shaped by the one-child policy he channels this solitude into a creative force. His pictorial universe reconstructs fragments of his childhood intertwined with the presence of his own children thus creating a world oscillating between memory and dreamlike reconstruction.
His works resonate with those of certain Western artists who address similar themes through different lenses. Much like Michaël Borremans who through his enigmatic portraits of children frozen in theatrical settings questions the perception of time and innocence or Peter Doig whose dreamlike landscapes and spectral figures convey memory filtered through emotion and subjectivity. Unlike them however LinGe Meng infuses his compositions with a luminous softness where everyday life becomes a refuge a space of solace in the face of solitude and the passage of time.
As Marcel Proust (1871–1922) wrote in In Search of Lost Time: "Man is the being who cannot leave himself who knows others only in himself." This reflection on memory and the perception of others deeply permeates LinGe Meng’s work as he seeks to capture the essence of identity through the lens of childhood and imagination.
Through this exhibition Vanities Gallery invites the viewer on a sensory and introspective journey where painting becomes the medium for an intimate dialogue with the past. An invitation to see childhood not merely as a memory but as a living substance in perpetual reinvention.
