Remembrance Sunday is a solemn day in the United Kingdom dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of military personnel who have died in wars and conflicts. This observance, held on the second Sunday of November each year, is closely tied to Armistice Day, which marks the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.
The tradition of commemorating fallen soldiers began shortly after World War I. In 1919, King George V inaugurated the first Armistice Day on November 11th, calling for a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. to remember the millions who had died in the war. This silence was intended to provide a moment of reflection and national unity, acknowledging the profound losses suffered by communities across the country.
As the years passed and World War II brought further loss of life, the scope of remembrance broadened to include those who had died in subsequent conflicts. In 1945, after the end of World War II, the British government decided that Remembrance Sunday would replace Armistice Day as the main day of remembrance, recognizing both World Wars and other conflicts. This change was made to ensure that the remembrance would always take place on a Sunday, allowing the whole nation to participate without disrupting the workweek.
Remembrance Sunday serves as a day of national reflection, honouring the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces who have fought and died in the line of duty. The central ceremony takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, where members of the royal family, political leaders, veterans, and representatives of the armed forces lay wreaths of poppies, a symbol of remembrance inspired by the poppies that grew on the battlefields of World War I.
By entering our exclusive Remembrance Sunday Run, you get the opportunity to pay tribute in your own special way. Not only will you receive a beautiful medal for your achievement, but you will also be spreading awareness and helping support charity work because 10% of all entry fees will be donated to the Royal British Legion.
The Royal British Legion (RBL) is a leading charity in the United Kingdom dedicated to supporting members of the British Armed Forces, veterans, and their families. Founded in 1921, the RBL has been at the forefront of providing welfare, advocacy, and remembrance for those who have served the nation.
