About the film:
Remaining Native is a coming-of-age documentary told from the perspective of Ku Stevens, a 17-year-old Native American runner, struggling to navigate his dream of becoming a collegiate athlete as the memory of his great-grandfather's escape from an Indian boarding school begins to connect past, present, and future.
In 2021, the Stevens organized the “Remembrance Run” after the discovery of the 215 unmarked graves with Indigenous children’s remains in Kamloops, Canada. The run spanned two days, over 50 miles to honor the memory of Ku’s great-grandfather, Frank Quinn, who escaped from Indian boarding school at only 8 years old. Communities came together to also acknowledge all children who ran, who stayed behind, and didn’t make it home. Today, we run to carry prayers for boarding school survivors and descendants, to remember their stories and create spaces for healing.

Community Guidelines
Welcome to the Remaining Native 5K Run/Walk—a community event honoring intergenerational resilience, land-based healing, and movement as a form of remembrance and resistance. This is more than a race. It’s a collective experience inspired by the story at the heart of Remaining Native and the journey of Kutoven Stevens retracing his great-grandfather’s 50-mile escape from the Stewart Indian Boarding School.
To keep this space respectful, inclusive, and grounded in purpose, we ask all participants to follow these guidelines:
- We acknowledge that this event takes place on Native land. We invite all participants to move with intention and respect for the land’s original stewards.
- Be kind, encouraging, and inclusive. We welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, bodies, and abilities.
- Hate speech, harassment, or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated
- This is a walk/run—move at your own pace and support others in doing the same.
- We aim to make this event accessible to as many people as possible. Please reach out in advance with accessibility needs.
- Pacers & volunteers will be available for assistance throughout the event route.
- Whether you’re running in solidarity, walking in memory, or simply showing up for your community—your presence matters.
- Take time before or after the event to reflect at our community altar/memory space (if included).
- Please be aware of your surroundings and remember we are running in a city!
As a friend of the film says, "Runners carry medicine when they journey to other communities," we run together to keep this in mind and spread the message of the film.
