All registrants will be requested to abide by all COVID safety protocols put in place by Oolite Arts and agree to all the terms in the waiver.Considered one of the oldest forms of printmaking, relief printmaking yields graphic prints that any beginning artist can incorporate into their practice. In this course, you will learn to design, carve and print your own relief blocks, while exploring texture, line quality and compositional considerations.
Students will be taught the best methods for planning and transferring their images utilizing the subtractive technique that is fundamental to relief printmaking. Additionally, students will learn how to mix and modify inks, handle paper, methods of registration, and how to finesse pressure to achieve bold and elegant prints.
By the end of this workshop, you will become familiar with the relief printing process, also known as block printing, which you can then incorporate into your art practice at home or in the studio. You will gain an understanding of the tools, color mixing, overlaying, and registration techniques.
The final outcome will be to complete an edition of unique 2-color relief prints on paper. At the end of this 1-day workshop, the class will also collectively look at the work produced and discuss technical and conceptual successes, skills learned, and future goals.
** Some beginner printmaking paper will be supplied, but feel free to bring in your own paper to experiment with during the workshop.
About the Instructor
Nick Mahshie is an artist and print designer from Miami, Florida. He holds a Masters of Design in Fashion, Body & Garment from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he worked under the renowned visual artist, Nick Cave, and a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design.
As Oolite Arts’ printmaking resident, Mahshie brings his knowledge of contemporary print practices to the public by leading workshops and hosting open studio hours to interested artists and designers.
Mahshie also teaches in the Foundation Studies program at Florida International University’s College of Architecture and The Arts. He has worked with artists of all ages as an educator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Children’s Museum of Art in New York City
