Learn to design, carve and print your own relief blocks, while exploring texture, line quality and compositional considerations. You will print blocks with fabric inks onto a variety of textiles, from old clothing to dishtowels or pre-purchased fabric yardage. The printing process will explore material considerations, color and printing techniques.
The final outcome will be to complete either an edition of unique relief prints on fabric, OR to transform an old garment into something fresh with our own relief print designs.
In this workshop, you will become familiar with block printing, also known as “relief” printing process, which you can then incorporate into your art practice at home or in the studio. You will learn about the tools, color mixing, overlaying techniques, and a variety of fabric substrates that can be printed on. You will produce multiple sample swatches with your print designs as well as finished printed artwork.
At the end of this 1-day workshop, the class will collectively look at the work produced and discuss technical and conceptual successes, skills learned, and future goals.
** Some basic cotton muslin will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own fabric swatches to class to experiment with the effects achieved by printing on other types of material.
