Dear friend,
With pleasure, we invite you to the opening of Reinier Vrancken's solo exhibition Ye (...) manifold.
Ye (…) manifold will be the third exhibition in our year of leakage. The solo exhibition consists of new works and will contain a text written by Christina Li.
The way Vrancken manoeuvres through information reminded us of artists that are representatives of institutional critique. There is, however, a lyricism to Vrancken’s approach. Instead of exposing institutional tensions and the critique thereof, Vrancken lays bare its poetic qualities and weaves them into new meanings.
An example of such is the limited edition flyer that was produced for his upcoming exhibition, in which he alludes to Marwan the space but also to Marwan the person as the sum of Tim and Tirza, and that sometimes one person can also be two. When we made our first exhibition in 2016 we decided to borrow the name of a friend: Marwan, a homage to a dear one moving away. Five years later, this anecdote became the basis for one of the works in Reinier Vrancken’s upcoming solo exhibition Ye (…) manifold. The fact that we adapted Marwan’s name appealed to Reinier Vrancken. His elusive works are oftentimes characterised by leaking meanings into other meanings.
Vrancken reinterprets this vignette in Marwan’s history within the context of our typical elongated paper strip exhibition flyers. He says that if the flyer would be a bracelet, it would either wrap around two wrists once, or around a single wrist twice. Vrancken brings these meanings into play with one another. The flyer conveys its meaning only when folded as if wrapped two times around a single wrist, yet is illegible and fragmented when folded otherwise or not folded at all.
