Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero)
Cumbia in the 21st century. The origins and evolution of cumbia from a regional folklore music to a worldwide phenomenon.
Mario Galeano, creator of Colombian band Frente Cumbiero, presents the past, present and future of cumbia – from a regional folk music on the intersection of indigenous peoples, African slaves and European settlers to a worldwide phenomenon permeating all four corners of the globe.
Mario Galeano
With a long and successful career, Frente Cumbiero has become one of the biggest representatives in the exploration of cumbia’s sonic identity in Latin America. Headed by Colombian songwriter and producer Mario Galeano Toro (also founding member of Ondatrópica and Los Pirañas), Frente Cumbiero is recognized as a spearhead of Colombia’s new cumbia movement.
Marimba Workshop - Son Rompe Pera
From the outskirts of Mexico City, marimba misfits Son Rompe Pera delve into the story of the Mexican marimba and how their unique take on the instrument has taken stages by storm the world over. Brothers Kacho and Mongo Gama will demonstrate how they set up their marimba and play it in a way that has sparked new interest in an instrument that has been traveling through the Americas for over a century.
Son Rompe Pera
Born and raised in the deep outskirts of Mexico City, the Gama brothers are keeping alive the rich legacy of marimba music running through their family with their latest project, Son Rompe Pera. While firmly rooted in the tradition of this historic instrument, their fresh take on the folk icon challenges its limits as never before, moving it into the garage/punk world of urban misfits and firmly planting it in the 21st century.
Originally performing alongside their father at local events as kids, they now find themselves at the forefront of the contemporary international cumbia scene with their sonic explorations of the classic marimba. Their absolutely unique blend comes from a typical youthful rebellion, when as teenagers they left behind their upbringing and began to play in various punk, rockabilly and ska bands. Now they’ve gone full circle with the return of the marimba on lead, and mixing all of their influences together with an energetic take on the popular instrument, giving it a new twist never before seen in Mexican folk music.
