“Yo No Soy Guapo” by Joyce Garcia

The documentary shows the panorama of sound culture and the adversities it has had to go through due to the prohibitions of the federal government. The ¨Sonideros¨ are a social and cultural phenomenon that are part of the folklore of Mexico City. This activity has become a profession in which entertainers play ¨cumbia¨, ¨salsa¨, ¨bachata¨ and ¨guaracha¨ music pieces. These events fill the streets with people willing to dance the night away. It is the debut feature of Veracruz documentary photographer Joyce García. This feature-length documentary was awarded the Incentive Program for Cinematographic Creators of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography in the "project development" in 2015.

Joyce Garcia

Joyce García is a filmmaker, photographer and producer from Vera Cruz, Mexico. She is a graduate of the Universidad Veracruzana and holds a master’s in Documentary Cinema from the UNAM.

In 2018 she completed her first documentary film Yo no soy guapo (I’m not a thug), which has been screened in Mexico, Brazil, USA, Colombia, Peru and Spain, and at festivals including Guanajuato International Film Festival, Los Cabos International Film Festival, Zanate, Ambulante, DocsMx, Festival de Cine de Lima PUCP, the Encontro de Cine Negro Zózimo Bulbul in Brazil, and at the Cineteca Nacional de México, Mexico’s foremost national film venue.

“Sonidero Metropolis” by Alvaro Parra

"Sonidero Metropolis" is the first episode in a documentary series about Mexican sound system culture, also known as Sonideros. The Los Angeles episode explores the connection between the cumbia epicenter that is Puebla, Mexico and Los Angeles, California, a city where thousands of Poblanos now reside. Antonio De Jesus, better known as Sonido Fantasma, has been a working sonidero for 31 years. A consummate veteran at the top of his game, he often plays in cities across the U.S. and Mexico, a rare feat in this industry. 17 year old Gardena resident Abimael Amaro, aka Sonido Profeta, played his first show at L.A's Salon Lazaro's at the age of 13. Sonido Profeta is part of a new generation of sonideros that utilize live stream technology to make a name for themselves in the U.S. and abroad. Many migrants living in the United States attend sonidero parties and record dedications or saludos spoken live on the mic by the sonidero. These saludos are instantly uploaded and received by their loved ones back home. The same is true for saludos being sent from Mexico to the U.S. In this way modern day sonidero culture acts as a conduit between these two countries. Sonido Fantasma and Sonido Profeta are both from Puebla, Mexico. This film depicts themes of migration, cumbia music, and labor, examined via the lives of two sonideros at opposite ends of their trajectories."
