Themes From Movies (Both Real & Imaginary)
This concert will combine “real” standards and the “imaginary” originals they inspired. You will also learn about the movies from which they came (again, both real and imaginary). Can you tell them apart?
Many songs now regarded as jazz standards were actually composed for movies—some films well-known, while others are all but lost to time. The composers had no control over a film being a box office hit—or completely forgettable. Thanks to a movie’s success, or in spite of its failure, many songs have taken on a life of their own.
This was the inspiration for the new concept album “Themes From Imaginary Movies”—nine DeCarlis retro-vibe originals from films (1938-1974) that never existed… except in the mind of the composer.
Many of the used records Nick first collected were actually jazz-infused movie soundtrack albums. A classic film buff, it naturally followed that he could easily imagine his songs in, well, imaginary movies set over a range of time periods. Sometimes the song title evoked a storyline; other times the mood of a song suggested a genre. This led to the creation of synopses for each of the imaginary movies, complete fictions wrapped in related facts. You may even find yourself wishing that you could watch some of them. Sorry—you’ll just have to use your imagination.
Nick DeCarlis, cornet, is well-known in North Florida as an interpreter of Great American Songbook and Bossa Nova standards. His instrumental style has been influenced by cornet/trumpet players including Bobby Hackett, Warren Vache, Jr., and Chet Baker. Over the last 25 years Nick has produced and performed in a variety of “themed concerts” in Gainesville and greater Jacksonville. The Quartet has played together for 10 years and features the artistry of Thomas Royal on piano, David Ottenberg on double bass, and Clyde Connor on drums.
