--------------
What? LAB-LEFT will be an international forum, a platform for exchange, a get-together. A unique moment in the heart of Eastern Europe. In collaboration with Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (Prague office): https://www.facebook.com/rosalux.cz
When, where? Budapest, November 22-24.
A lab? Orbán and his cronies present Hungary as a laboratory for far-right rule. But they’re not the only ones at work. They divide, we organise: LAB-LEFT.
The concept: The event will focus on the various building blocks needed to establish a successful left-wing political movement. Bringing together activists, politicians, labour organisers, journalists, and researchers from both Hungary and abroad, LAB-LEFT will showcase a wide variety of effective left-wing alternatives in the context of right-wing hegemony.
The practicalities: The event is completely free, but registration is mandatory. For participants travelling to Budapest, members of the organising Szikra Mozgalom will provide solidarity accommodation for free.
Register here: https://a.szikramozgalom.hu/forms/registration-to-lab-left
Features: We are honoured to be welcoming as guests Li Andersson - leader of the Finnish Left Alliance and the country’s former Minister of Education, David Broder - Jacobin’s Europe editor, and Jan Bělíček - the cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Czech online daily Alarm.cz. More exciting participants will be announced soon!
The Forum will be structured around 5 thematic pillars, each featuring specific guests and programmes:
Local Powers
How do left-wing movements embed themselves in local communities? What forms of services, participation and outreach can establish long-term presence?
# progressive municipalism, participative democracy, community organising
The War of Position
How to navigate institutional politics without being subsumed by it? What constraints and possibilities does coalition-building entail? How do national parties coordinate with local initiatives?
# party-building, national politics, parliamentarism
The Outside Foot
How do political movements reinforce struggles happening outside the institutional realm? What can effective collaborations with feminist, housing and labour initiatives look like?
# labour organising, feminist struggle, housing
Green Eastern Europe
How to build cross-class support for a just transition in Eastern Europe? How can environmentalism and ‘green industries’ be repoliticised from a left and cross-class perspective?
# just transition, anti-extractivism, green municipalities
Raising our Banners
What communication strategies have proven successful in a right-wing, oligarchic mediascape? What effective possibilities of mobilisation have digital platforms enabled? What can we learn from successful left-wing media projects?
# media, communication, digital strategies
