This is a beginner friendly, all levels class that is an exploration of Contact Improvisation (CI). Registration is done through the Carrboro Department of Parks and Recreation. Minimum enrollment of six people a couple of weeks prior to start date needs to happen for it to occur. Cost is $48 for the series of six classes for Orange County residents. There is a small additional fee for those from outside Orange County.
The topics are student driven, which can include but not limited to, an intro to the pragmatics of jamming (safety, etiquette, entering/exiting dances, asking for what you want, saying no and yes, etc), requests for exercises that could include feedback and suggestions about things like execution of specific movement types (e.g. rolling point of contact, weight sharing, use of spirals, use of double helix, use of momentum, going in and out of the floor, lifts, flying, falls, etc), however if your current interest is in learning more about CI in general, I have plenty of material to draw upon including a description of it's history and different aspects (including application of engineering ideas based upon newtonian physics like: fulcrums, levers, screws, centripetal 'force', aka sling shot, etc) and skills that were found useful during the course of its development, including how they are useful, based upon my personal take. Also movement improv performance approaches and skills, personal growth perspectives, etc.
For the theory minded, my take on CI is that "it's an ever evolving experiment whose original research question was 'what is possible when two bodies come into contact', with the parameters being gravity, newtonian physics, and body mechanics".
As results were found new parameters and research questions emerged. At the moment, I would describe the type of question that many are exploring is some variant of "What is possible when humans come into contact, with the same original parameters, plus those of affect, cognition, and the human condition."
Additionally I condition that question on the prior results I am aware of.
That is,
"Given we know something about weight sharing and transfer, momentum, a shared center of gravity, sling shot trajectories, the use of spiraling movement, and other embodiments of Newtonian physics, as well as some knowledge of things like mirror neurons, the central and peripheral nervous system, etc. what is possible when humans come into contact."
