New Zealand's Biggest Book Sale is Back: The Regent Theatre Annual Book Sale Returns to the Edgar Centre for 2026
The highly anticipated Regent Theatre 24 Hour Book Sale, the Southern Hemisphere's reputed largest second-hand book sale, returns to the More FM Arena, Edgar Centre (116 Portsmouth Drive) on Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The sale, which has been a major fixture on the Dunedin calendar for nearly 50 years, has grown so large that it permanently moved from the historic Regent Theatre to the larger More FM Arena in 2023. This change provides much-needed space for the tens of thousands of donated books and items, along with the convenience of free parking and easier public access.
All proceeds from the books, which are donated by the public and sold by volunteers, are essential for the continued existence and maintenance of the 97-year-old Regent Theatre, which is run by a charitable trust. Since 1979, the annual sale has been the single most significant source of funds for the cultural landmark.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the scale of the book inventory, cassettes, CDs, and records will not be available at this event. A separate music memorabilia sale will be held mid-year.
