Have you ever thought that your memories may be worthy of recording for future generations, but you didn’t know where to begin? Discover how Dr. Maruta Lietiņš Ray approached this issue at a St. Cloud Area Genealogists (SCAG) presentation on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. She will share her process and the story she wanted to preserve with historical accuracy for her grandchildren.
At the meeting, Dr. Lietiņš Ray will present her childhood memoir, “Refugee Girl,” which was published in 2021. The book follows a world in turmoil as seen through the eyes of a child born during World War II in Latvia, part of the "bloodlands" of Europe. The author lived under Hitler and Stalin, spent a short time in a Nazi internment camp and five years in a displaced persons camp. At age 10, she came to America on a troop transport ship and grew up in New York.
Come hear Dr. Lietiņš Ray’s story of how, at a time of mental and physical anguish and scarcity, people displayed miraculous resilience and the courage to alter their paths in life. The presentation takes place in person at the Stearns History Museum, 235 33rd Ave. S., St. Cloud, and will be broadcast live for members of SCAG and registered guests who need to watch remotely on Zoom.
The program is free to SCAG members; $7 for non-members. Non-members can pay at the door or pay for remote access through the SCAG online store: https://scagmn.org/store. The individual annual membership rate for SCAG is $25.
Dr. Maruta Lietiņš Ray is a professor emerita at the University of Virginia and now lives in Central Minnesota.
