What to expect: Dave Shaw died on 8 January 2005 while attempting to recover the body of Deon Dreyer from Boesmansgat. Gordon Hiles will recount the story on the 20th anniversary and share some of his footage taken on the day.About Gordon Hiles
Gordon joined SABC in 1973 in Johannesburg as first group of 40 to be trained for the upcoming TV service.
Around 1964 he began snorkelling (free diving) and spearfishing at Sunny Cove and other places within False Bay. He began scuba diving and doing underwater camerawork in 1984.
Gordon worked as a cameraman on all forms of TV programming.
Highlights of underwater camerawork:
• 1992 & 1993 first filming of Great White Sharks for Discovery/National Geographic at Dyer Island
• 1987 onwards – filming for various commercials – Ocean Fridge; HTH; various pool cleaners
• Early 90s – underwater scenes for various documentaries, TV Series & Feature Films
• 2004 – 2005 Boesmansgat Cave story with David Shaw
• 2006 onwards – various documentary productions
