After waking up, we try to rebuild the world that faded under our eyelids. We collect scraps that we could put back together again. We recreate an endless puzzle of random details. New paintings are like snapshots from a bad dream. I collect strange specimens and trinkets (a deformed image of an underground mirror, a sunray reflected in a lens, gold flashing on a sand grain), bouncing light that may take us to another place.

They record a journey through an underground world of shredded pasts. Like in a Fun Boy Three song, “The lunatics have taken over the asylum”. Reality around us makes us crave an escape from the grid and limits of understanding, and towards prehistory. It’s like turning the lights on and off as well. In the dark, we cling to the wall, so we don’t bump our heads. Anything is possible. I turn on the switch and suddenly find myself inside a big room. I had been here before I closed my eyes. I turn it off and on again. Images connect to each other in the dark.

Po przebudzeniu próbujemy odbudować świat, który rozmył się pod powiekami. Zbieramy strzępy, które moglibyśmy na nowo połączyć w całość. Odtwarzamy niekończącą się układankę przypadkowych detali. Obrazy z nowej serii przypominają wycinki złych snów. Gromadzę dziwne przedmioty, błyskotki, których odbite światło (promień, blask odbity w soczewce okularów, ziarenku piasku) czy zdeformowany obraz w podziemnym lustrze przeniesie nas gdzie indziej.
"(...) tak jakbym robił cięcia na rozmaitych wysokościach mieniącej się tęczowo i napozór nieruchomej fontanny."
To zapis podróży przez podziemny świat złożony z odłamków przeszłości. Jak w piosence Fun Boy Three “The lunatics have taken over the asylum”. Otaczająca rzeczywistość budzi potrzebę powrotu do prehistorii, ucieczki poza mapę i granice zrozumienia. Kojarzy się też z włączaniem i wyłączaniem światła. W ciemności chwytamy się ściany, by nie rozbić głowy. Wszystko jest możliwe. Zapalam lampę i nagle znajduję się w dużym pomieszczeniu. Byłam tu już wcześniej, jeszcze zanim zamknęłam oczy. Gaszę i znów zapalam. Obrazy łączą się w ciemności.
"(...) słyszymy wciąż dokoła siebie ów identyczny dźwięk który nie jest echem z zewnątrz ale odgłosem naszego wewnętrznego drgania. Silimy się odnaleźć na wszystkich rzeczach szacowny odblask naszej własnej duszy; doznajemy zawodu stwierdzając, że w naturze są one odarte z uroku jaki zawdzięczały w naszej myśli sąsiedztwu pewnych pojęć; czasami zmieniamy wszystkie siły duszy w zwinność, w blask, aby oddziaływać na istoty, o których czujemy dobrze że są na zewnątrz nas i że ich nie dosięgniemy nigdy."

Gabriela Cygan
Born in 1990. In 2015 graduated Fine Arts Academy in Krakow with a Master’s degree. She works and lives between 3 cities: London | Porto | Cracow. She practices figurative painting. Fragments of various objects, suspended in void portraits, elements of landscapes - torn from their real environment, they change their character. Apparent dismemberment/disintegration allows for the creation of a new quality. She seeks an appropriate form to express emptiness and internal decay. However, on the other hand, she utilizes shattered elements and assemble them into a new whole. She pays great attention to details, which determine the final shape of the painting.
