Film Description:
Director: David Grabias
Year: 2025
Running Time: 98 min
A rigorous artistic vision that leans into cinema’s ability to create empathy, YOU SLEEP STAY seeks to convey the resonances of a deaf, intellectually and developmentally disabled senior citizen who’s lived in a large State institution for over 70 years — and now has to move. Exploring his experience of time, community, and language, the feature-length documentary is a story of home and family, of brothers and responsibility, and of the role filmmakers play in participating in reality—not just reflecting it. The first documentary made in a U.S. institution for the developmentally disabled in 50 years, YOU SLEEP STAY transforms filmmaking into a communication machine — celebrating Fred’s unique language, immersing audiences in his universe, and highlighting society’s failure to provide adequate resources for his community.

Join us for a safe and supportive conversation as we delve into the themes presented in You. Sleep. Stay. This facilitated discussion aims to provide a space for participants to express their feelings, share insights, and explore personal responses to the documentary. Mindfulness Coach Daron Larson will introduce an emotional regulation strategy inspired by the cinematic process. Following the screening, he will invite participants to discuss the difference between moving and manipulating an audience, where this film falls on that continuum, and the power of individual empathy to drive social change.
