Florence Price: Symphony No 1
Antonín Dvořák Symphony No 9 (From the New World_
Conductor: John Beswick
Come and hear two symphonies with an American flavour in our next concert. Dvořák sought to give his 1893 'New World' symphony American resonance having been inspired by American folk music and his Czech roots also come through in the one classic music's most enduring popular works, immortalised for some in the 1973 "boy on a bike" advertisement for Hovis bread (The Largo).
Some 40 years later, African-American Florence Price (pictured), became an award-winning composer in the face of considerable prejudice, but her music was largely neglected until its recent discovery. Echoes of Dvořák's First Symphony can be detected but the overall tone of the works comes from African-American traditions, especially in the exuberant 'Juba Dance' third movement.
