About this Event
This Winter, come along to Kirkleatham Museum to hear tales of daring, bravery and dedication from those who know the trecherous waters around Redcar.
This unique talk brings together Rodney Thompon, fisherman and Lifeboat Crew Member, and Tony Young, who restored the precious Zetland Lifeboat, built 1802 and part of the National Historic Fleet.
In this public talk we will discover the incredible innovations that helped The Zetland Lifeboat save over 500 souls at see. Tony will share with us what saw when he opened this incredible boat, almost two hundred years after her original construction in 1802, explaining how she was made and restored.
Rodney Thompson will share with us the resues his father and grandfather were involved with on the Teesmouth Lifeboat, The J. W. Archer in the deadly winter of 1938, when the HMS Walrus met with a full North Easterly. Rodney, who served on the James Knott Lifeboat will tell us what it's like to be aboard during exercises and rescues.
Both Rodney and Tony are seasoned seamen who know how trecherous conditions at sea can be, and will share with us their treasured knowledge of lifeboats, rescues and perils at sea.
This talk is the culmination of Kirkleatham Museum's celebration of 200 years of the RNLI and Redcar's Lifeboat Story. This talk is part of a series of activities that include The Call Lout, a cross-arts exhibition of poetry and art by writer Carmen Marcus and illustrator, Kat Lynas depecting the dramatic stages of a lifeboat call out, from the first call for help, to the perilous rescue and finally the return home. Carmen and Kat delivered a programme of community and school engagement work about lifeboats across the summer of 2024.
The Call Out is a sister project to Michael Sreenan’s "Let Not The Deep Swallow Me Up” which serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of community, compassion, and service that has characterised the RNLI for two centuries.
