About this Event
Addiction can be seen as psychological, behavioural, physiological and even spiritual. When we understand the causes of addiction we can target meeting those needs, known as 'recovery'. This training is an informative course drawn on years of experience and many hours of recovery work with people from all walks of life and all sorts of trauma and expressions of addiction. The same elements that lead to addiction become the starting place for recovering. These were learned through study but more importantly real-life examples from the author and others met over hours of mentoring and mutual support in recovery of addictions of many types.
We look with seriousness at the chronic nature of addiction, yet keep in mind hope with real life recovery stories or substance addiction like alcohol and other drugs, as well as behaviours like gambling. Behavioural addictions are viewed as more controversial than substance addictions, but they work the same in the brain, and respond to the same support and strategies as other addictions. Gambling and pornography may be the best known behaviours that activate the same dopamine receptors as all addictions.
Behavioural addictions show that the problem is deeper than the obsessive activity. An unhealthy relationship with something that numbs pain while giving temporary relief from emotional difficulties ultimately causes intense and damaging shame to the individual and serious problems to family and work.
Our brains lock into deep and powerful habits, especially when childhood foundations are insufficient, and some key perspectives, values and practices can help people to create and strengthen their own tools which replace harmful ways with healthy ones, rebuilding new healthier lives.
We're hosting a series of training sessions from the 12th-16th June at the Maple Centre, Huntingdon, and we'd love for you to attend one or more! Each session will only cost you £5 for someone in need to use to buy a meal at The EDGE Café!
