Although in recent times the Treaty of Waitangi has been reaffirmed as thenation’s founding document and a sacred covenant, what the Treaty meant
in its time and means for us today remains contested.
It is the intention of this wānanga-symposium to invite scholars of history,
law and theology to contribute to the theme of “Reconciling the Treaty”.
The papers will seek to reframe the contested treaty discourse
through offering fresh perspectives and insights on:
• The imperial context
and two language versions of the Treaty
• The application of the Treaty in Aotearoa-
New Zealand’s law and constitution
• The social impact of the Treaty
on identity and race relations
