About this Event
The Institute for Canadian Citizenship is proud to present the 19th LaFontaine-Baldwin Lecture, Reconciliation and the evolution of Canada, delivered by Canada’s Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon.
The historical narrative of Canada has often ignored Indigenous voices and stories, negatively influencing how Indigenous peoples have been treated and perceived in this country. Many newcomers to Canada have limited or no experience with Indigenous history, people, or culture throughout their citizenship journey. Her Excellency’s address will discuss the true history of Canada – the good and the bad – as both acts of citizenship and reconciliation for newcomers to Canada. As Canada’s Governor General and the first Indigenous person to hold this office, Mary Simon is uniquely positioned to bring all Canadians together for this vital public discussion. This historic event promises an evening of insightful discussion and important commentary on Reconciliation and the evolution of Canada.
Reception begins at 6:00pm, the official program begins at 8:00pm.
The 19th LaFontaine-Baldwin Lecture is generously presented by the University of Calgary, with support from MobSquad, Arts Commons, The Marriott Courtyard and The Dorian, The City of Calgary, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Mamdani Family Foundation, Canadian Western Bank, Calgary Foundation, Air Canada, Suncor, the Calgary Herald and Pattison Outdoor Advertising.
