About this Event

Reclaiming Narratives: Hidden Black History & Celebrating the Contributions of Black Trailblazers

What does this event consist of?

This event will facilitate an in-depth and honest discussion about Black history, its place in society and the way in which dangerous assumptions and stereotypes perpetuate negative narratives about the Black and Asian community.

Who will I be learning from and sharing ideas with?

On the day, we have an expert panel, including the University's very own PhD student, Writer, Poet and Facilitator, Nairobi Thompson, and SpectaculArts CEO, Sharon De Leonardis; the University hopes to bring knowledge and wisdom to an audience representative of our local and wider community, in and around Luton and Bedfordshire.

We will also be joined by another University star, Professor Uvanney Maylor, who is a Professor in Education and member of our Institute for Research in Education, Katrina Hayden-Morrison - Historian and Rudo Gwashavanhu - Samuel Whitbread Academy student, activist, and aspiring journalist.

Hosted by Simon Bedeau, a public speaker and Founder of Power in Discussion, this will be a discussion you do not want to miss.

Who is Welcome?

EVERYONE! Not only will this event cater to University staff and individuals from the community, but we expect to have college and 6th form students in attendance too. This is a great learning opportunity for all and a safe space where we can share our thoughts and feelings about what Black history means to us and celebrate together at this special time of year.

The Inspiration

The imagery for this event is taken from a play, written and performed by Nairboi and Sharon, Rise of the Empress - set to be performed at the prestigious University of Cambridge during Black History Month! With this in mind, attending this discussion is not only a special opportunity to share experiences and educate others on Black History and the role it plays in our society today, but a chance to get up close and personal with industry experts!

We look forward to seeing you!
