About this Event
Event Description
Remember the Golf balls is a programme of events recalling the iconic radar domes of RAF Fylingdales, which dominated the landscape of the North York Moors. The geodesic domes were a space age design innovation by the architect Buckminster Fuller. They surrounded the radar dishes at RAF Fylingdales, which tracked satellites in Earth orbit and watched for signs of nuclear attack.
This event in the programme will offer the opportunity to build a geodesic dome. The event is suitable for ages 14+ and is particularly suitable for students.
Other events include a soundscape of the North York Moors in a geodesic installation by award winning sound recording David de la Haye (hosted by MIMA from Noveber 12), and a drop-in memory of the domes event at Thornaby Archive on Thursday 14 November, 14:00-16:00.
This programme was developed by the Fylingdales Archive and ongoing research into the space heritage of the Northeast of England at RAF Fylingdales.
