While Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice, he did not say the bending occurs automatically. Someone has to do it. Last November, West Virginia Democrats suffered a resounding setback and should explore strategies for recovery.
The West Virginia State Democratic Executive Committee met last month with barely a quorum present. Party leadership said things would get better. Preparation and organization seem preferable to merely wishing and hoping. The State Executive Committee is supposed to provide a framework for future electoral success. Among matters discussed at that December meeting—or not discussed—might provide a starting point for this meeting.
1. It has been said the three most important things in politics are money, money, and money.
The December 2024 treasurer report showed approximately half a million dollars flowing through the party in 2024, with just six lines containing totals only. References were no better. Often this means there is something to hide. Youth sports teams have more detail. A special finance meeting via Zoom last summer in the middle of the workweek and unsurprisingly without a quorum was equally superficial. There is apparently no financial plan.
Among finances discussed at the December meeting was a “policy” that charges candidates for voter data. Party leadership assured us candidates were helped in this regard but did not say who established this so-called policy or how it is determined which candidates are helped. One would think a party is supposed to help candidates, not vice versa. Maybe this helps explain why there were so many Democratic Party vacancies on the ballot last November.
2. In our modern era of information technology, one would think open communications would be available and encouraged. Not so. State executive committee by-laws do not even allow members-at-large to call meetings. Only the leadership can. Instead, the by-laws are being amended to kick people off the committee even if attending by proxy and elected by voters. How does that help?
3. Party leaders are also giving a pass to prominent Democrats, including our 2016 and 2020 governor candidates, who support Republicans whether overtly or covertly. Covert support has been through political action committees (PACs), where supporters are not identified, and misleading communications produced and distributed.
Hope you can make the meeting either in person or virtually at: https://us05web.zoom.us/meeting/register/DzSKWs39TOGDurst_-7XpA.
