Join us for RBC's Sept event as we explore Alex Hutchinson's book, "Endure: Mind, Body & the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance"
About this Event

Welcome to the RBC Oxford where we'll be diving into September's theme, Endurance, through this month's read, , by Alex Hutchinson.

In Endure, Hutchinson reveals why our individual limits may be determined as much by our head and heart, as by our muscles. He presents an overview of science’s search for understanding human fatigue, from crude experiments with electricity and frogs’ legs to sophisticated brain imaging technology. Going beyond the traditional mechanical view of human limits, he instead argues that a key element in endurance is how the brain responds to distress signals - whether heat, or cold, or muscles screaming with lactic acid - and reveals that we can train to improve brain response.

Why we chose to read Endure: "If you want to gain insight into the mind of great athletes, adventurers, and peak performers then prepare to be enthralled by Alex Hutchinson’s Endure." - Bear Grylls

Delicious drinks are included, as well as engaging storytelling and space for conversations and sharing your own journeys across countries and continents.

Your host for the evening: Andie

Originally from Bilbao, Spain, Andie works in public relations for businesses in the renewable energy sector. In her free time, she's a voracious reader, book blogger and amateur runner. Having spent part of her 20s living in Baku and Moscow has made her drawn to Soviet history and she can't resist a good spy biography.

Andie believes that books are the answer to every question and there is no better tool to help us understand how the world and people work. She's leading RBC Oxford hoping to continue spreading the love for knowledge through a supportive and fun community that comes together for engaging conversations, growing a little with each book and discussion.

Andie's non-fiction recommendations:

1. Agent Sonya by Ben MacIntyre

2. Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
