About this Event
Welcome to the RBC Manchester event, where we'll be diving into September’s theme, Endurance, through this month's read, , by Alex Hutchinson.
In Endure, Hutchinson reveals why our individual limits may be determined as much by our head and heart, as by our muscles. He presents an overview of science’s search for understanding human fatigue, from crude experiments with electricity and frogs’ legs to sophisticated brain imaging technology. Going beyond the traditional mechanical view of human limits, he instead argues that a key element in endurance is how the brain responds to distress signals - whether heat, or cold, or muscles screaming with lactic acid - and reveals that we can train to improve brain response.
Why we chose to read Endure: "If you want to gain insight into the mind of great athletes, adventurers, and peak performers then prepare to be enthralled by Alex Hutchinson’s Endure." - Bear Grylls
Special guest: Jack Tunney
Jack Tunney grew up with a father who was an ultra-marathon runner, constantly nudging him to take on the challenge of running one himself. For years Jack resisted until one evening, after a few glasses of wine and some well placed peer pressure, he finally said yes.
The race? The gruelling 2022 Desert Marathon in Namibia.
Against seasoned professionals, in one of the toughest environments on earth, Jack didn’t just finish, he stunned everyone by winning. A breathtaking triumph of grit, preparation, and sheer willpower.
This is a story of perseverance, resilience, identity, and pushing beyond the limits of mind and body. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Jack as our special guest, here to relive his incredible journey and bring lived expertise to this month’s read, Endure.
Inspired by our monthly non-fiction reads, our mix of part cocktail party, part creative classroom is a recipe that builds your reading habit while connecting with like minded people.
Delicious drinks are included, as well as engaging storytelling and space for conversations and sharing your own journeys across countries and continents.

Your host for the evening
Omar Latif
Omar is the founder of an AI startup and also pursuing a PhD in Behavioural AI. One big reason Omar joined RBC is to get away from academic literature, gain knowledge in areas outside of his interests and to have engaging conversations with the awesome community.
There is a clear alliance with the philosophy and taste of RBC as Omar has already read 70% of the books from the Rebel Book Club library!
Ryan Fellows
Co-host Ryan is an Honorary Salfordian having lived here for 14 years, but proudly born and raised in Preston
Having discovered RBC during ‘lockdown’ the monthly variety was a welcome distraction and the old zoom meets’ helped keep his sanity! Post Covid he’s looking to help build the Manchester crew
A keen amateur historian and lover of most sports; when not delving into a new book he’ll be watching the weekend's football or out running (in the famous Manchester rain!).
