Thursday, Nov. 7, Dr. Michael Chang
As artificial intelligence (AI) has been envisioned to support teaching and learning, researchers have sought to engage students, teachers, and families in order to build more ethical and effective tools. However, many of those co-designed tools nevertheless fit within existing inequitable instructional practices. In this talk, Dr. Chang will present a multi-year co-design study that engages students and teachers in dreaming about equitable possibilities for schooling and AI outside of the dominant status quo. Dr. Chang will attempt to answer the following questions for designers. (1) how do we build co-design contexts that support stakeholders in envisioning possibilities outside the status quo and (2) What are the limitations of viewing the products of co-design contexts as “final” and how might we productively engage how those products came to be as an important part of design?
