Co-Constructing Alternative Educational Architectures through Speculative Civic Literacies

Normative paradigms of educational praxis are oriented toward preparing young people to endure social arrangements built upon foundations of inequity and oppression. Such logics of teaching, learning, and research are mired in the world as it is. In this talk, we offer the framework of speculative civic literacies as an exhortation to instead imagine alternative educational architectures that can guide us toward co-constructing the liberatory worlds that could be. We invite collective dreaming about the ethics, commitments, and practices that can guide our communities forward in this pursuit and discuss innovations in participatory methodologies, learning models, and pedagogical designs that are concrete embodiments of this social dreaming.

Nicole Mirra is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University. Antero Garcia is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. Their research utilizes participatory design methods in classroom, community, and digital spaces to collaboratively create learning environments with youth and educators that disrupt structures of injustice and compose liberatory social futures.
