We are happy to announce that we are starting again with our monthly reading group sessions. This is going to be our first meeting of the new academic year, and we are going to discuss an article written by our own Dr. Daniel Vella. Please read the article before the reading group. It is available for everyone here: https://eludamos.org/index.php/eludamos/article/view/7928/8785
His article appeared in a recent special issue of the game studies journal Eludamos dedicated to the idea of Fictional Games (and how to study them).
In case you are wondering, Fictional Games are playful activities and ludic artefacts devised as part of fictional worlds. They exclusively exist as fictions, and can only be understood as 'games' in an oblique, indirect fashion, as they are experienced as playable artefacts only by characters within a narrative world.
Daniel, the author of the piece we are supposed to read and then discuss together will help us understand his text. Also present at this reading group will be Riccardo Fassone and Stefano Gualeni (authors of a 2022 book on Fictional Games and editors of that particular special issue).
The reading group will meet at the IDG at 17.00 on >> MONDAY NOVEMBER THE 3RD <<
As always, you are supposed to have read the text, which we will discuss in an informal, relaxed, and friendly manner.
Feel free to invite your friends (especially if they're into games that do not exist)!
