Coding with Elan (Richard Pawson)
Elan is the first new programming language to be designed specifically for teaching programming in British schools since BBC Basic in 1981. Richard Pawson, who leads the design team, will address the most obvious question: ‘Why do we need another language, what’s wrong with the status quo?’ Currently at Beta, but nearing Release 1.0, Richard will demonstrate a few of Elan’s most innovative features.
Richard has been programming for 50 years starting at school writing Fortran with a hand-operated card punch. His first job was for Commodore in January 1977 – the month when Commodore announced the world’s first production personal computer. In the intervening years he has spent periods in journalism, management consulting, advanced robotics, software engineering, and teaching. He has a degree in Engineering Science, a PhD in computer science, and a PGC in Intellectual Property Law. In 2024 he was appointed a Fellow of the BCS.
