Performed in 1986 at the South Bend Civic Theatre Firehouse, The Man Who Came to Dinner is a classic comedy about the world’s worst house guest. Sheridan Whiteside, a legendary and mean-spirited theater critic, slips on the ice while visiting the Midwestern Stanley family—and then, to everyone’s dismay, refuses to leave, inflicting himself on the Stanleys for six weeks over Christmas while entertaining a parade of snarky celebrity guests.
Playwrights Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman based the comedy’s characters on real-life friends of theirs, including theater critic Alexander Woollcott, playwright Noël Coward, comedian Harpo Marx, and infamous axe murderer Lizzie Borden. In 1942, The Man Who Came to Dinner was adapted as a feature film starring Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, and Jimmy Durante.
CIVIC’s production of The Man Who Came to Dinner features many of CIVIC’s “Legends,” including several from the 1986 production.
