About this Event
Although invisible to the naked eye, there are billions of microbes in just a single teaspoon of soil! These microbes are crucial to life on Earth, yet most remain largely unstudied. Scientists refer to this hidden majority as microbial dark matter. One of the most complex environments in which to study microbes is the rhizosphere: the soil and its inhabitants immediately surrounding plant roots.
Join us to learn about the rhizosphere, its fascinating organisms, and their ecosystem roles with Caltech PhD student Zahra Shivji. Zahra will give an overview of how scientists study the rhizosphere and demo soil sampling techniques.
Zahra Shivji is a 2nd year PhD student in the Karthikeyan Lab at Caltech. She enjoys community outreach and teaching others about the fascinating world of microbiology!
