Andrew Dyet
Andrew Dyet is a sound artist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who’s work exists at the intersection of acoustic, electric, classical, and noise; focusing on creating moments that expand in time, often growing into complex, deep worlds before returning to reality. He has performed as a trumpet player, pianist, percussionist, and laptop musician in solo and ensemble settings. Andrew has been commissioned by soloists and ensembles across North America and has participated in several artist-in-residency programs across the globe.
Dyet will present, "Vibrating Forms: A Ceramic Chorus,” an immersive sound sculpture installation that encourages deep listening of the textural timbres of ceramic sculptures. While the sculptures are placed around the outside of the room, audience members can wander through the room hearing how the proximity to different sculptures changes their listening experience. Each sculpture is a unique form with an emphasis on the imperfect - no two sculptures are alike and may have characteristics that are considered “flawed” by traditional standards.
"Vibrating Forms: A Ceramic Chorus” will be presented throughout the main gallery.
Ella Medicus
Ella Medicus is an artist interested in exploring the nature of perception and stretching the mind to imagine the consciousness of other things and objects. She writes from the perspective of materials, such as light photons, or a hive mind. The writings are paired with visuals and audio to help tell the story.
Medicus presents their video and sound installation work, “Agreements,” with sound design by Otal. “Agreements” is written from the perspective of a photon and wave of light. If you were light itself, would you be able to see? Seeing only happens when light bounces off an object and into an eye. The light photons make agreements with the objects they will come in contact with, to meet at a point, and create an image for any eyes that might be nearby to witness.
“Agreements” will be presented in the loading dock room.
Maya Nguyen
Maya Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Russian interdisciplinary artist who gathers speech fragments, urban recordings, body movements, migratory routes, sounds imitating nature sounds, and videos of daily encounters into open-ended compositions. Her practice engages power relations inherent in human interaction and the environments that facilitate these interactions, focusing on the domestic sphere, colonial histories, migratory routes, and the relating between the human and the natural world. MN holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Comparative Literature from University of Chicago and an M.F.A in Sound from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with professional engagements at Poetry Foundation and Asymptote Journal.
Nguyen presents "Whisper Wind Water" - an immersive, spatialized sound installation for four speakers. The artist creates a soundscape of her whispering voice that builds up into environmental textures in response to site-specific habitats. Textures of howling wind, whistling grass, and rippling water emerge from layers of the human voice, reflecting on the human experience of, and effects on, nature.
“Whisper Wind Water” will be presented in the activity room.
