Re:Sound is CUSP's annual “new” and experimental music festival that brings together and showcases pioneers in the arts with diverse programming at venues throughout Cleveland. By connecting local and visiting performers, Re:Sound propels innovation and elevates contemporary artistry in Northeast Ohio.

Concert I features:
RAGE Thormbones (Mattie Barbier & Weston Olencki)
Theresa May & Sarah Overton
Lea Bertucci & Henry Fraser

RAGE Thormbones
RAGE Thormbones (Mattie Barbier, Weston Olencki) is a low-frequency duo whose work exists at the intersections of “fuck around” and “find out”. Their sounds bring together various de/re-constructed brass instruments and electronic synthesis + amplification, with many trips to the hardware store and the polyphonic hum of Mattie’s fabrication shop and Weston’s overworked CPU load. They produce sculpted masses of high-density sound, carving metallic resonance and subcutaneous tones to make rooms feel really heavy. They aim to shift the role of brass instruments away from vocal virtuosity and more toward their true selves as improvising organic air compressors – physically-modeled synthesis transcribed back into the acoustic domain.
things in the dark that ought not exist is a long form exploration of embodied sound and instrumental modification that seeks to recontextualize brass instruments from their gendered perceptions into vibrational entities. Functioning as organic air compressors, the duo constructs non-notated work in close collaboration that is intrinsically grounded in the inherent but latent acoustic irrationalities of musical instruments that are sonified by unstable, bodily driven sound.

Theresa May & Sarah Overton
Theresa May is a trumpeter, educator, and creator from Shaker Heights, Ohio. Theresa's commitment to diverse music shines through her role as adjunct faculty at Cuyahoga Community College, where she imparts knowledge in Applied Trumpet and World Music. Theresa is a champion of new works for brass and her performances with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and Mourning [A] BLKstar showcase her versatile musical prowess.
Sarah Overton embodies three distinct roles as a Performing Artist, Arts Advocate, and Teaching Artist. She has graced renowned venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, SoFar Sounds, Cipriani's, and stages in Wales and Paris. Sarah was recently the principal cellist for the Sugar Lane band with Chiõma, showcasing her versatility and collaboration with Grammy-nominated musicians.
Theresa and Sarah, who met while touring the nation with the Broadway Sinfonietta, join musical forces in this trumpet and cello duo to explore the combination of their instrumental sounds with electronic pedals, electronic beats, and reimagining classical string works.

Lea Bertucci & Henry Fraser
Lea Bertucci is an experimental musician, composer and performer whose work describes relationships between acoustic phenomena and biological resonance. In addition to her longstanding practice with woodwind instruments, her work incorporates spatialized speaker arrays, radical methods of free improvisation and creative misuses of audio technology. In recent years, her projects have expanded toward site-specific and spatially aware projects that initiate new access points to architecture. Her approach to music is marked by dense masses of sustained dissonance and a fascination with the sonic substance of common experience.
Henry Fraser grew up immersed in music. He began playing the double bass at 14, sparking an interest in improvisation via the music of Charles Mingus. Fraser moved to NYC in 2014, after graduating from New England Conservatory of Music, and has been actively working in the areas of jazz, long-from drone, noise, and spectral music. Much of Fraser’s work is rooted in his music for solo double bass, which has culminated in three releases - his latest, Breath Line is scheduled for release in the spring of 2024 - establishing him as a technical and creative force among his generation of bassists.
Lea Bertucci and Henry Fraser bring a new duo project of voice processed through reel-to-reel tape machine, woodwinds, electronics and double bass to CUSP in a spectral, improvised set of music that meditates on the mystical heaviness of existence.
