Alcohol often has a bad name, but TCM has a much more nuanced view on alcohol. In fact, the Chinese have a long history of using alcohol for healing purposes, hence the saying “cure comes from wine” 医源于酒. Alcohol has been used as the base for medicinal concoctions, to enhance the efficacy of herbs. It is also known for vitalizing the spleen, liver, stomach, and small intestine, and promoting circulation of the blood and qi, when consumed in moderation and “prescribed” based on the individual’s body constitution.
