About this Event

Re-Imagining Dracula Night with author Steven Peros + Screening of EVIL OF DRACULA

Published in 1897, the creative genesis of Bram Stoker’s novel, “Dracula”, has had much speculation over 126 years since its debut. Further, the bloodthirsty Count has evolved from page to stage to film to television over the century-plus, blurring the lines between where Bram Stoker’s Victorian era creation begins and what defines him in the minds of 21st century fans.

Many are surprised to learn that written-in-stone staples like Dracula sleeping in a coffin or being reduced to ashes in sunlight are inventions of stage and screen, not literature. Join screenwriter/playwright, Steven Peros, as he discusses Bram Stoker’s Dark Prince, how he was re-envisioned in Japan by Toho in 1974 in EVIL OF DRACULA, and also in Steven’s own critically acclaimed graphic novel, “Stoker & Wells: Order of the Golden Dawn”, which imagines a 20-something screw-up named H.G. Wells meeting a disgruntled 40-something theater manager named Bram Stoker, and the two men going on a shared adventure that leads to the creative inspiration for both writer’s first great work: “The Time Machine” and “Dracula”.

EVIL OF DRACULA, 1974, AGFA, 87 minutes. Dir. Michio Yamamoto. The third in what has become known as Toho’s “Bloodthirsty Trilogy”, these were three standalone widescreen vampire movies, all under 90 minutes, from the studio best known for unleashing GODZILLA on the world, and the decades of kaiju films that followed. A successful Assistant Director for many years (including on Kurosawa’s THRONE OF BLOOD), THE VAMPIRE DOLL (1970, the first of the trilogy) was only Yamamoto’s second feature as director, leading to THE LAKE OF DRACULA (1971) and, finally, to EVIL OF DRACULA. What many in the west don’t realize is that Hammer Film’s colorfully lurid Christopher Lee Dracula gothic horrors where very popular in Japan and a big influence on this film’s style, which also, according to the director, borrowed from Tarantino-favorite, GOKE, BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL (1968). This is a rare opportunity to see what is regarded as the best of the trilogy, on the big screen in all its colorful, Cinemascope, blood-soaked glory!

Steven Peros is best known for writing Peter Bogdanovich’s THE CAT’S MEOW, starring Kirsten Dunst and Eddie Izzard. His debut graphic novel, “Stoker & Wells: Order of the Golden Dawn”, met with rave reviews from LA Weekly and all the comic industry websites. Steven is developing it into a TV series with former Marvel Studios President Michael Helfant's Amasia Entertainment. He has just completed writing a trilogy of graphic novels, relaunching Billy Tucci’s iconic character, SHI, and grossing over one million dollars worldwide. Steven’s feature screenplay, “I Am Life”, is in pre-production with three-time Emmy winner Simcha Jacobovici directing and Steve Solomos (David Cronenberg’s CRIMES OF THE FUTURE) producing. Steven penned three episodes of AMC's Emmy Award-winning half-hour comedy, “The Lot”, and was a writer on Disney's AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. His original teleplay for “A Country Christmas Story”, starring Dolly Parton, broke Holiday Season ratings records for Lifetime Television. Steven is also a film historian whose writing has been published in MovieMaker Magazine, The Huffington Post, New York's Newsday, Village Voice, and Scr(i)pt. He is currently writing eight chapters and co-editing “Giant Beast Cinema”, coming this fall from BearManor Media.
