The FILM CHALLENGE in a Nutshell:
🎩 Join us for the Draw Night - it’s a blast!
🗓 Saturday October 4th, 4.30pm-6pm at Waa! Club
🎱 You’ll randomly draw your film prompts (don’t worry, it’s totally optional to finish your film, so why not give it a go!)
🎬 From there, you’ve got 9 months to create a short film via the challenge and if you do, have it screened at the Random Directions 2026 Film Festival!
💥 No pressure, no judgment - just a whole lot of creative, fun-filled filmmaking!

More info about THE CHALLENGE:
The Random Directions Film Challenge is a yearly event all about sparking creativity, encouraging new and emerging filmmakers and shaking things up from the usual. The idea’s pretty simple: make a film that includes the “Random Directions” and see where it takes you.
"Random Directions” are fun, unexpected elements you randomly draw or are given at the Challenge Event and work into your short film as part of the Challenge. They can be anything from a genre, a theme, a prop, a piece of music, or even a random phrase. They change every year, keeping things fresh and making sure each Round brings a new wave of creative, diverse films, all made right here in the Upper South Island.
New Rounds kick off around September or October and run through to July 1st the following year. Then in August or September, we wrap things up with the Random Directions Film Festival - held at Event Cinemas in Blenheim and State Cinemas in Nelson - where all the finished films hit the big screen and we celebrate local filmmakers and their awesome work!
