An erudite scholar, distinguished ethnomusicologist and vocalist trained in Hindustani art music under several eminent gurus, Dr. Ashok Ranade is well-known to the music world, nationally and internationally. He has to his credit several books on varied subjects including aesthetics, theatre, voice culture, folk music and cultural connotations related to art music as well as insightful television interviews which he conducted with eminent personalities from the world of music.

Besides being the Founding Director of the University Music Centre, Mumbai (now, Department of Music, University of Mumbai), and Associate Director at the American Institute of Indian Studies in Pune, he also served at the NCPA, Mumbai, as the Deputy Director for Research, Theatre Development and Publications.

Furthermore, Dr. Ranade was also recognised as a composer. He wrote under his pen name, Rasikrang, several compositions in art music (bandish), lighter genres (sugam sangeet) and the Maharashtrian folk form of lavni.

Suresh Bapat, a disciple of Dr. Ranade, is a well-known vocalist. With an aim to bring to the fore his mentor’s contributions to Indian music, he, along with a talented group of young vocalists, will present an exclusive evening based on the whole gamut of Dr. Ranade’s compositions from art music to Baithaki chi lavani, Kala Ganesh, Geeti bhan, Sakalanche soyare, Sawan, Radha and more.

The musical pieces at the presentation will be preceded by original announcements recorded in the voice of Dr. Ranade.
