Private Lives on 35mm
Introduced by Rob Patrick, Olympia Film Society's Director of Programming, on 4/10
A rarely screened 35mm print from the Warner archives. True wit meets marital grit in this timeless Noel Coward comedy about two bon vivants who can’t live without – or with – each other. Montgomery was never more suave and Shearer never more slinky than in this pinnacle of the sophisticated comedy.
Dir: Sidney Franklin / 1931 / US / 84 min
“A dazzling success.” – Pauline Kael, New Yorker
“Norma Shearer is having fun in this one - angrily fluffing pillows, tossing cigarettes into cocktail glasses, snapping her fingers in Robert Montgomery's face - it's all fever and frivolity. One of the most underseen and underappreciated of the pre-code comedies.” – Rob Patrick, Olympia Film Society's Director of Programming
