About this Event
The contribution of Captain Walter Goalen to Australian hydrographical knowledge and maps.
10.30am, Friday 26th August 2022,
Jervois Room, Ground Floor, Mortlock Wing,
State Library of South Australia.

Captain Walter Goalen R N (1846-1925) specialized in hydrographical survey work and the preparation of nautical charts in coastal SA and NSW in the 1860s/1870s and later in other parts of the world.
Walter Goalen was married to Kitty, sister of Archie Grenfell Price, prominent geographer, author and long-term member of the RGS (SA Branch) who became very close to his uncle Walter after his father died when Archie was only three.
Presenter Hugh Orr will describe some of Walter Goalen’s life as well as showing us some of the maps of South Australia with which Goalen was associated and which are in the RGSSA and State Library Collections.
Please wear your RGSSA name badge. Masks may be compulsory.
The library of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia holds an extensive collection of books and other items. The Rare Books meetings provide an opportunity to uncover items of significance that are "hiding" in the shelves.
Please register via Eventbrite.
Cost: free to RGSSA members. Non-members welcome for a small fee. Please note that a booking must be made to attend the meeting.
The State Library advises that standard COVID precautions will be in place including the wearing of masks. No one should attend if they are feeling unwell. Check in and social distancing to be adhered to as well as frequent use of hand sanitisers.
