As one of Lancaster Conservancy’s most northern preserves, the late-successional forest at Rannels Kettle Run Nature Preserve contains many large trees and snags which provide ample homes for birds, insects, and small mammals. As we hike, we’ll talk about how decaying trees play a vital role in keeping other elements of the forest alive and healthy. This area of forest is prone to keeping snow on the ground longer than other areas in Lancaster County. If there is snow, we’ll bring tracking guidebooks along to try to identify what we’re seeing.Registration via Eventbrite ticketing link above.
What to Expect:
This 4.3-mile figure eight hike has some steep ups and downs and about 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Our route will take us on the Horseshoe Trail, through State Game Land, and then into Rannels Kettle Run preserve twice. There are no restrooms available onsite. If there is snow, our route may be revised based on the depth of snow.
What to Bring:
Bring water, snacks, pertinent personal first aid, sufficient layers, and hiking poles (optional). If there is snow, traction will be required. Yak tracks or micro spikes are sufficient for light snow. Deep snow will require snowshoes. If traction is required, you will be informed of this ahead of time. Animal track identification guides are optional to bring if there is snow.
