Ginuwine met rookie producer Timbaland in New York, and the two recorded the unusual, synthesizer-infused R&B effort "Pony" together. The song attracted strong interest, and at the age of 21 Ginuwine chose to sign with the New York-based Sony subsidiary 550 Music. He enjoyed immediate success with the release of the song, which reached number 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart, and number 6 on the Hot 100 chart. On the strength of his work, he went on to become one of the main forces in late '90s R&B.
